Description

The first offered for public sale by a major auction house in over seven years! Fans of the Baltimore Orioles and Cal Ripken Jr. will do a double-take when they find the offered 1980 Charlotte O’s Police Orange Border Cal Ripken Jr. has finally been made available. As “the holy grail of modern minor league cards”, few hobbyists will have the opportunity to view, let alone purchase this regional card of the Hall of Famer. Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA, the Orange Border set was issued for the Charlotte Police force and was distributed randomly, one-at-a-time to youngsters while on patrol or at other community functions. As such, an already elusive 25-card set (a partial set of 15 different cards is available elsewhere in this auction) was made even more challenging as most cards were ultimately discarded or well handled. This cornerstone is absent of any of the creasing or other acute wear associated with the handful of copies known. As the subject of websites such as www.ripkenintheminors.com and other recent online articles, a handful of examples of this “Iron Man” have recently begun to trade in the five figures for any condition. Only 15 total specimens have been judged by PSA. Compare that with the vast number of Ripken collectors and the value and incalculable future upside of this cornerstone becomes quite apparent. This item has a reserve. Estimated value ($5000+).
